Metal Free Dental Restoration

  /  Metal Free Dental Restoration

At TKDDS, we advocate for metal free dental restorations. The information below outlines some of the differences between the available options for metal free fillings, inlays, onlays, and crowns. Dr. Kaur and Dr. Petersen practice a biological philosophy which means you have the option of testing for dental materials which are compatible for your individual biology. Composite Resin Dental Fillings

Advantages
– Conservative tooth preparation
– Restorations completed in one dental appointment
– Reduced appointment time

Disadvantages
– Less predictable long-term success
– Material may contain BPA (Bis Phenol-A) and petrochemicals
– Remaining healthy tooth structure at higher risk of fracture

Ceramic Dental Fillings (inlays and onlays)

Advantages
– More predictable long-term success
– Silicate-based material, relatively inert dental material

Disadvantages
– More aggressive tooth preparation
– Restorations completed in two dental appointments
• Requires placement of provisional/temporary restoration to be worn for at least two weeks
• Possibility of provisional restoration fracturing or coming out
• Possibility of more tooth sensitivity during this time
– Remaining healthy tooth structure at higher risk of fracture
– Longer appointment times

Ceramic Crowns

Advantages
– More predictable long-term success
– Silicate-based material, relatively inert dental material
– Tooth structure is completely covered by crown, low probability of fracture

Disadvantages
– More aggressive tooth preparation
– Restorations completed in two dental appointments
• Requires placement of provisional/temporary restoration to be worn for at least two weeks
• Possibility of provisional restoration fracturing or coming out
• Possibility of more tooth sensitivity during this time
– Longer appointment times
